Sea Trout

The Sea Trout is one of the few really large wild trout that can be caught in rivers in the UK. This fine specimen weighed in at just on 7 lbs. It was caught in Hampshire during October 1999.

This fish put up an abnormally ferocious fight for its size. It was netted as quickly as possible so as to ensure that it was not exhausted for the rest of its journey. it is my policy to return all sea trout caught. This is because they are such a fine fish.

Sea trout stocks are rapidly becoming depleted due to overfishing at sea, overfishing of sand eels which the sea trout eat, illegal netting in river estuaries, poaching and environmental problems. It is a near mircale that any fish make it to the breeding streams at all.

The red mark which you can see near the gills on this seatrout is not blood, but a reflection.

This fish was caught just after dusk and returned to the river completely unharmed.
